Established in 1850 Marin County is home to over 252,916 residents.

A study published in 2010 reveals that crime rates for felony and misdemeanor drug offenses increased from 402 per 100,000 in 2000 to 533 per 100,000 in 2008 in Marin County.  In 2008, arrests due to dangerous drug offenses accounted for approximately 18% of all arrests, narcotics for roughly 19%, marijuana for 43%, and 20% were for other drug violations. Crime rates for felony and misdemeanor alcohol offenses also increased from 1,285 per 100,000 in 2000 to 1,501 per 100,000 in 2008. Marin County’s alcohol arrest rate was higher than the state overall each year.

During roughly the same time frame, rates of hospitalization and death due to drug and alcohol use also increased.  The rate of hospitalizations due to alcohol and drug use increased from 161 per 100,000 in 2000 to 179 per 100,000 in 2007. The death rate due to alcohol and drug use increased between 2000 and 2007 from 13.29 deaths per 100,000 to 22.85 deaths per 100,000.
