Established in 1851 Placer County is home to over 350,048 residents.

Crime rates for felony and misdemeanor drug offenses in Placer County increased from 753 per 100,000 in 2000 to 770 per 100,000 in 2008, after peaking in 2005 at 942 per 100,000. The highest rate of arrests for drug‐related crime was for 18 to 24 year olds with a rate of 1,963 per 100,000 in 2008. The next highest rate was for 25 to 34 year olds with a rate of 1,844 per 100,000.

Crime rates for felony and misdemeanor alcohol offenses increased from 1,533 per 100,000 in 2000 to 1,561 per 100,000 in 2008.  Arrests due to DUI accounted for approximately 61%, public drunkenness for roughly 35%, and 5% were for liquor law violations in 2008.

As crime rates for drug and alcohol offenses increased, so did the rates of both hospitalization and death due to alcohol and drug use in Placer County.  The rate of hospitalizations due to alcohol and drug use increased slightly from 127 per 100,000 in 2000 to 130 per 100,000 in 2007. The death rate due to alcohol and drug use increased between 2000 and 2007 from 14.69 deaths per 100,000 to 23.44 deaths per 100,000.
